Manchester City's hopes of signing Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko in January have been dealt a blow after the striker said he expected to remain at the Bundesliga club until the summer.

Bosnia and Herzegovina international Dzeko has been strongly linked with £30 million move to Eastlands during the winter transfer window as a replacement for the out-of-favour striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

But asked in an interview with Sport Bild if he would stay at Wolfsburg until the summer at the least, Dzeko said: "That is up to Wolfsburg. But at the moment it looks like I am staying."

The 24-year-old added: "I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression: I very much enjoy playing for Wolfsburg. But I also have a dream. I want to play in the Champions League every year."

Although City are yet to qualify for the Champions League they are in a much better position, lying third in the Premier League, than Steve McClaren's Wolfsburg, who are 13th in the Bundesliga.

Last week, Dzeko, who has scored 10 goals in 17 league games this term and ended last season as the top scorer in Germany, said he hoped Wolfsburg would let him leave.
