Martin Whitmarsh played down the significance of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton topping the timesheets in FP1 at Hockenheim.
The McLaren pair were first and second during the first practice session for the German Grand Prix as the team ran a heavily-updated car. Speaking straight after the session finished, Whitmarsh confirmed that it was nice to be top but warned against reading too much in to the times before he had received feedback from the drivers.
"Well we haven't done the debrief yet so I think it's too early to tell!" Whitmarsh told Sky Sports. "I think again this hasn't been a particularly clean session, I mean it's obviously nice to be topping the timesheets but I think it's a bit early to be punching the air right now.
"I think the car was balanced from the outset, today we tried a few other little changes so for us it's been a reasonable session given the sprinkling of rain throughout it. But a little too early yet to be saying it's a good step forward. I mean, the data looks reasonable, but I haven't asked the drivers - I'm about to listen to them in a minute and we'll find out what they say."
