The latest bright hope of English golf, Tom Lewis shot himself into the wider golfing conscious with a blistering round of 65 in the first round of the 2011 Open Championship - in the process becoming the first amateur in more than 40 years to lead the historic major.
Lewis went on to make the cut - and win the silver medal - at Royal St George's, but defied expectations by subsequently remaining an amateur until after the Walker Cup in September. After helping Great Britain & Ireland to a narrow victory at Royal Aberdeen, Lewis finally turned professional and set himself the difficult of task of earning his playing privileges for the 2012 European Tour season.
That he would do in style, becoming the quickest winner as a professional on the tour since Alejandro Canizares - as he won just his third start at the Portugal Masters. Five birdies in his closing seven holes earned the 20-year-old a two-shot victory in Vilamoura, as he underlined the fact he is one to watch over the coming years.
Career high: Winning the Portugal Masters on just his third start, securing his professional future until the end of 2013 in just his third professional event.
Career low: Lewis has had few in his career, but losing in a playoff in the New South Wales Open as a 19-year-old denied him a victory in a professional tournament while still an amateur.
Quote: "I want to earn my Tour card, keep it, then win an event, finish in the top 10 on the Order of Merit, qualify for the Ryder Cup and win some majors. It would be nice to win my first event within the next three to four years, although that could happen in the next month of course. But if I've not won by the age of 23, I'll be disappointed."
Trivia: Lewis is named after his father's idol, Tom Watson, and was paired with the great of the game for the opening two rounds at the Open in 2011.
