Darren Clarke has revealed he may have to shelve his plans to go on a diet after clinching his first major win.

Clarke held his nerve down the closing stretch at Royal St George's to win at the Open Championship at the 20th time of asking.

The Ulsterman and his manager Andrew 'Chubby' Chandler had struck an accord to go on a diet following the Open, but Clarke may well revise those plans.

"I'm supposed to be on WeightWatchers tomorrow," Clarke said. "With my manager Chubby Chandler on it, I can't get away from listening about it.

"I'm staying at Chubby's apartment, so I'm going to eat and drink as much as I want tonight. I think there's five points for every pint of Guinness but this could be a bad week for me to try to start.

"I've no idea how much weight I'm going to lose, we'll see. I'll probably get bored with it after a week and give up."
