Lee Westwood will never win a major title unless he improves the quality of his putting under pressure, according to his coach Pete Cowen.

Westwood entered last week's Open at Royal St George's as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, but he failed to make the cut after finishing at four-over following rounds of 71 and 73.

As a result he continues to be labelled as the best player never to have won a major and, at 38, time is running out on the world No. 2.

"Someone like Lee can have a slightly better than average putting week and probably still win. His putting was shocking last week. He was second in greens in regulation I think and missed the cut," Cowen said.

"[To win a major] you just need a little bit of luck here and there, and a good putting week. We're going to sort that out this week. We'll have it sorted by the US PGA Championship that's for sure."
