English golfer Ross Fisher has withdrawn from this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to stay with his ill son Harry.

The three-month-old was taken ill in Killarney on Saturday night as the former Ryder Cup player attempted to make a successful defence of his Irish Open title, with the sleep-deprived Fisher carding a disappointing final round 73 to drop out of contention as Simon Dyson claimed victory.

The 30-year-old immediately returned to hospital to be with his wife and son, and was told by doctors that Harry would be kept in for observation until Friday. As a result, rather than fly out to Firestone Country Club to play in the prestigious event, Fisher has opted to stay with his family.

"Harry should be fine - it looks like it's just precautionary," Fisher's manager, Conor Ridge.

The final major of the year, the USPGA Championship, takes place next week - but Fisher is yet to decide whether or not he will be in the field.
