Webb Simpson claimed his second PGA Tour win in three weeks as he edged out compatriot Chez Reavie in a tense two-hole play-off at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Simpson hit a six-under 65 on the final day at TPC Boston, which included five birdies and an eagle, to force Reavie - who hadn't won on Tour since 2008 - to endure the most nerve-wracking of showdowns. Indeed, the pair both birdied the 18th in the first of the play-off holes before Simpson sank a nine-foot birdie putt on the 17th to snatch the win from Reavie's grasp.

Reavie earlier entered the final hole in regulation play with a one-stroke lead over Simpson but, after his first two shots betrayed no sign of nerves, he sent his third flying past the green and was unable to get up and down for the par he needed to avoid a play-off, sending a 15-footer just right of the cup. Reavie's bogey was his first for 30 holes - and it came at what had been playing as the easiest hole.

World No. 1 Luke Donald led the tournament by one shot through ten holes, before imploding on the back nine, which he played in a two-over 35 after a double bogey at 12 and a bogey at 16. Donald, who is now fifth in the FedEx rankings, finished in a tie for third alongside Brandt Snedeker and Jason Day at 13-under.

Overnight leader Bubba Watson never looked comfortable as the pace-setter, and he was powerless to prevent the slow unravelling of his challenge on the final day, eventually signing for a hugely disappointing 74 that left him well off the pace at eight-under.

Dustin Johnson, second in the FedEx standings, finished at three-under, while Matt Kuchar (3rd in the FedEx) was two-under. Both will need to play better in the coming weeks to protect those coveted positions.

Nick Watney's chances of victory evaporated when he took an 11 at the par-five second, picking up a three-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a hazard - he smashed the floor in anger - and landing the ball in water.

The top 70 players in the FedEx standings will go through to the next play-off event, the BMW Championships, meaning that Padraig Harrington will play no further part in the after a birdie-free 75, while Graeme McDowell's hopes of landing the $10 million bounty have also disappeared.
