FedEx Cup winner Bill Haas, who scooped $11.3 million with victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday, admits Webb Simpson was unfortunate not to land the jackpot.

Simpson ended 2010 outside the world's top 200, but is now ranked 12th after enjoying a breakthrough 2011 season on the PGA Tour, notching two wins.

He was at the summit of the FedEx standings heading into the Tour Championship at East Lake, but finished 15 points behind Haas, who lifted the trophy by beating Hunter Mahan in a play-off.

"Being 25th [at the start of the Tour Championship], all I could do was hope," Haas told Sky Sports. "Webb Simpson played the best golf in the play-off series but it worked out for me the way the points were."

Haas saw off the challenge of Mahan by producing a stunning recovery shot at the second play-off hole, chipping to three feet from a lie in shallow water. "I got an unbelievably fortunate lie, it was basically a bunker shot and it was all or nothing. There was a bit of luck involved - I got some spin on it, I didn't know that - I was very lucky.

"I hung in there, I was very fortunate and it's pretty unbelievable."
