Luke Donald has admitted he must strike a balance between golf and family commitments as he bids to become the first man to win both the European and PGA Tour money lists in the same season.

Despite missing out on the $11.4m payday at the Tour Championship at the weekend, Donald's third-place finish has elevated him £40,000 clear of Webb Simpson in the PGA Tour money list.

On the European Tour, Donald has a healthy lead over second-placed Rory McIlroy, but is in Scotland this week in an attempt to cement his advantage in the Race to Dubai standings with a strong showing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

"It would mean a lot to lead both money lists," Donald said. "No one else has done it, being a member of both tours - and that's why I will keep an eye on what everyone is doing. You always try to accomplish things nobody has ever done. I think it will be pretty special."

But with his wife Diane due to give birth in six weeks' time, Donald, who is almost guaranteed to end the year as world No. 1, plans to take a break from the schedule to spend time with his family. However, he has already set his sights on playing in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida at the end of October, where he has promised to take his one-year-old daughter Elle to Disneyland.

"A lot of my rest is dictated by my wife being due," he said. "I have to discuss it with her as well. But our daughter would love a week at Disney."
