Luke Donald's bid to top the PGA Tour money list suffered a real blow as he dropped off the pace at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.

Donald needs to finish in the top two to stand a chance of overhauling Webb Simpson and started brightly with an opening round of 66. But playing the tougher Magnolia Course in his second round, he signed for a 71 to move to seven-under.

The world No. 1 started two shots ahead of Simpson but will go into the weekend level with his big rival who plotted his way round the course superbly for a round of 69 - spoiled by a bogey on the last.

In contrast, Donald was wayward off the tee and failed to gain any traction on a day of frustration. He sits five shots off the pace, which is being set by Justin Leonard, Bio Kim and Henrik Stenson at 12-under.

Leonard rolled back the years with a sizzling display to charge into contention. The American stroked in one eagle and seven birdies in a round of 63 on the Palm Course to move up to 12-under. Kim powered his way to a 65, while Stenson joined them at the top of the leaderboard late in the day with a 64.

There was disappointment for British pair Justin Rose and Brian Davis who missed the cut after moving to level-par for 36 holes.
