Luke Donald: 'I'm player of the year'

World No. 1 Luke Donald admitted his achievement of winning the final event on the 2011 PGA Tour to become the first European to finish top of the American money list is "hard to put into words".

A stunning final-round 64, which included six consecutive birdies on the back nine, saw him storm to victory at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, where he won by two strokes.

An overwhelmed Donald, who will now focus on becoming the first man to win the money list on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season, said he was thrilled to land his second PGA crown of the year. He said: "This was an awesome day and it was a wonderful feeling to play so well under pressure. I came here with a chance to create history and I'm thrilled to pull it off.

"It's hard to put into words. Obviously I came here and the goal was to win - nothing was really going to be good enough other than that. I think this is probably one of the most satisfying wins of my career just because of that. It was kind of do or die.

"This is obviously the first stroke-play event I've won in the US for five years, too, which is pretty special. It's just knowing that I had to do it and being able to do it, and all of it kind of went along with picking up the first place. It's very, very special."

Webb Simpson, the man Donald overhauled on Sunday, was rewarded for his tied-sixth finish by moving into the world's top 10, while Spain's Sergio Garcia climbed from 49th to 31st after ending his three-year title drought by claiming an 11-shot victory at the Castello Masters.
