Chalmers captures Aus PGA after play-off battle
Greg Chalmers overcame Robert Allenby and Marcus Fraser in a play-off to add the Australian PGA Championship to his recent Australian Open win.
Chalmers, 38, posted a 67 to finish at 12 under, then triumphed with a par at the first play-off hole. "I was surprised to see that par was good enough, I thought we were going to have to birdie this hole but that's how it goes sometimes in play-offs," Chalmers said.
"I felt fine on the tee shot but the putt was the hardest thing. This Australian PGA Championship has such a rich history and to have won it now, coupled with the Australian Open, I'm over the moon."
Overnight leader Kim Kyung-tae was four shots clear at one point, but found an unplayable lie at the fifth before going on to make a double bogey - and, shaken by that setback, he struggled to launch a sustained challenge. Bubba Watson, his playing partner, never recovered from a start of double bogey, bogey.
Aaron Baddeley took advantage of Kim's struggles to build a two-shot advantage over the rest, but he too fell by the wayside, eventually finishing in fourth alongside Adam Scott.
