Former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger has taken aim at Tiger Woods over the former world No. 1's antics around Augusta last week.

Four-time winner Woods cut an unhappy, irritable figure for much of the Masters tournament, in which he finished well down the field at five over.

His simmering frustration boiled over at the par-three 16th on Friday when, having missed the green, he dropped and then kicked his club - an act of dissent he has subsequently apologised for.

"Tiger's antics this week were an embarrassment to the game, to the membership at Augusta," Azinger said. "I was really disappointed to see him carry on that way. He's not trying to endear himself to anybody... I thought he acted like the south-end half of a northbound mule."

Woods has tried to overhaul his swing under the guidance of Sean Foley, but his action looked unreliable and he succumbed to a series of hooks from the tee.

"I think his brain is full of swing thoughts, not swing feelings," Azinger said. "I can't compare my career to Tiger Woods' career, for sure, but I'll say this: in the 28 years I've played golf for a living I've never been as lost as he looked out there."
