Rory McIlroy has won the battle to convince Steve McGregor, Manchester City's fitness expert, to continue working with him.

McGregor was in two minds whether or not to continue assisting the Ulsterman because of the strain placed on him by his workload: as well as his focus on City and McIlroy, he helps Lee Westwood and the New York Knicks.

McIlroy credits his improved form off the tee to McGregor, and that was in evidence at the Wells Fargo Championship over the weekend, where McIlroy lost to Rickie Fowler in a play-off but managed to return to the world No. 1 spot.

He recorded a mammoth drive of 380 yards at Quail Hollow, and is now tenth in the overall driving distance standings on the PGA Tour, averaging a shade over 300 yards.

"What has all the work in the gym given me?" McIlroy said. "I don't think I hit it any longer, I just don't need to try and hit it. I don't have to go after it quote so much."

McIlroy's manager Conor Ridge said: "We didn't quite beg, but Rory did feel Steve was a vital part of the team. He's really happy Steve could keep working with him."
