Confident Westwood to stick with new putter

Lee Westwood will stick with his new clubs for the forthcoming US Open, admitting he is full of confidence heading into next week's major.

Westwood strolled to victory at the Nordea Masters this week, winning the event by five strokes. As the highest-ranked player in the tournament he was always expected to challenge, but the yawning gap to the rest of the field was impressive.

The Worksop-born golfer now looks ahead to his 57th major, still searching for that elusive first victory. He has won 40 titles elsewhere but, like reigning world No. 1 Luke Donald, a major championship has escaped him.

Westwood has won several tournaments the week before a major in the past, but 15th place is the best he has gone on to achieve in such circumstances.

However, this time Westwood has new irons and - crucially - a new putter in his bag, which appeared to make a difference around the greens at Bro Hof. And the former world No. 1 revealed he would stick with a winning formula when the US Open commences next week.

"I'll tee off on Thursday with a lot of confidence," Westwood said after winning the Nordea Masters.

"I think they [the clubs] have earned the right to stay in. You're never too sure first time in the bag, but you don't win tournaments by five shots without playing really well.

"I missed a few short putts, but you just have to stay patient. Sometimes you don't have to do as much as you think."
