Wiesberger finishes strong to win at home

Austrian Bernd Wiesberger picked up his second European Tour victory of the year on Saturday, firing a memorable final round of 65 to steal a popular home win at the Lyoness Open.

Wiesberger, who broke his tour duck with a triumph at the Ballantines Championship in April, eventually burst through the pack to claim a three-shot victory after a seven-under par final round, ultimately finishing comfortably clear of Shane Lowry at 19-under.

"It's the best day of my life so far," Wiesberger said afterwards. "It seems like it went my way, especially the last two holes.

"I had such a great country and such great fans backing me. I'm very proud to be following in such big footsteps [as the only other past home winner, Markus Brier]. I'm sure I'm not going to be the last home winner."

Thorbjorn Olesen, the leader going into the final 18 holes, had a disastrous conclusion to his tournament - bogeying three of his final five holes to slip down the leaderboard and eventually finish fifth at 14-under.

The Dane, who seemed to run out of steam after a strong performance at last week's Open Championship, eventually ended up signing for a final round of 74.

Wiesberger, in contrast, enjoyed a sparkling back nine to eventually take the victory in Austria. Having reached the turn just one-under for the day, the 26-year-old reeled off six birdies and three pars on the way to the clubhouse as he comfortably held off Lowry's charge.

The Irishman, who famously won his domestic open as an amateur back in 2009, fired a great round of 66 to clamber into contention, before seeing Wiesberger match him shot for shot on the back nine.

Frenchman Thomas Levet finished third at 15-under, with Sweden's Rikard Karlberg a shot further back in fourth.

The top-ranked player in the field, world No. 90 Pablo Larrazabal, ultimately finished just inside the top ten after a final round of 69.
