Sergio Garcia put himself firmly in Jose Maria Olazabal's eyeline ahead of the Ryder Cup with a significant surge up the leaderboard on day two of the Wyndham Championship.

Garcia is currently not in possession of a guaranteed Ryder Cup place as he embarks on his final tournament before the automatic qualification window slams shut after the Johnnie Walker Championship later this month.

He is 11th on the World Points List, 12.8 points behind Ian Poulter in tenth, who currently is a part of skipper Olazabal's European team. At the Wyndham last year, only a top-three finish was enough to guarantee more than eight world ranking points.

Garcia is two strokes off Jimmy Walker at the top of the leaderboard at ten-under midway through day two. Nonetheless, with a hatful of players yet to appear at Sedgefield on Friday, he is still likely to require one of Olazabal's two wildcard picks, unless he is chosen as a vice-captain, as he was in 2010. He has played in three victorious Ryder Cup campaigns for the European squad.

Garcia will face wildcard competition from Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts and Padraig Harrington of Ireland, among others.

The Spaniard, who missed the cut at the US PGA Championship in his most recent appearance, played the back nine in a three-birdie 32, then came home with four more birdies, signing for a 63.

Tim Clark had a 67, while overnight leader Carl Pettersson also ended the day at 10-under the card. Webb Simpson lifted himself into outright second, one stroke behind Walker, with an impressive seven-under round of 63.

Jason Dufner, Charl Schwartzel and Nick Watney, three of the better-known names in the field, are locked at five-under. Dufner has a chance to go to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the first play-off event, the Barclays.

England's Gary Christian and Paul Casey finished two and three shots above the cut line respectively heading into the weekend's play.
