Victorious Garcia books Ryder Cup spot
Sergio Garcia secured an automatic place in Europe's Ryder Cup team after a final-round 66 saw him land a first PGA Tour title in four years at the Wyndham Championship.
Heavy rain forced play to be abandoned in North Carolina on Sunday, with Garcia returning on Monday holding a one-shot lead with 14 holes left to play.
Resuming his round at the fifth hole, Garcia settled any persisting nerves by playing his first six holes in level-par. Tim Clark - one of three players locked on 14-under overnight (one shot adrift of Garcia) - posed a threat but Garcia pulled clear with a birdie at 13, before extending his advantage with a hat-trick of birdies from the 15th.
Clark piled the pressure on Garcia when setting the clubhouse lead at 16-under after a final-round 67 but, despite a closing bogey, his rival got over the line - prevailing by two strokes after a four-under 66 - to displace Ian Poulter in Europe's Ryder Cup team with one qualifying event to go.
Poulter had moved into the 10th and last automatic qualifying spot after finishing in a tie for third at the USPGA Championship, but is expected to be named as one of captain Jose Maria Olazabal's wildcard picks.
Nicolas Colsaerts is another player hoping to feature for Europe at Medinah next month, and he staked his claim as he finished in a tie for seventh, five shots behind Garcia. The Belgian made early inroads with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, but slipped back after finishing with four pars for a 66.
Colsaerts, who is due to play in the Johnnie Walker Championship later this week, can still claim a spot by right - a top three finish would see him knock Martin Kaymer out of the automatic places. With nine of the 10 automatic qualifiers now secure, the final spot is between Kaymer, Colsaerts, Scotland's David Lynn and Rafael Cabrera Bello.
Bud Cauley shot a final round 68 to take third, three shots behind Garcia, while Chad Campbell, Carl Pettersson and Jimmy Walker finished in a tie for fourth.
