Tiger tames TPC Boston with terrific 64

Tiger Woods grabbed control of the FedEx Cup play-offs by beginning the Deutsche Bank Championship with a brilliant seven-under 64 at TPC Boston.

Woods, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season, was projected to go top of the FedEx standings at the completion of his opening round.

As a result, he is also in pole position to land the $10m FedEx bonus, handed out after the last of the four play-off events, the Tour Championship, which ends late next month, shortly before the Ryder Cup begins.

TPC Boston is not renowned as one of the toughest tracks on tour - and it was brought to its knees by Woods, who was faultless with his irons, hitting green after green and giving himself multiple birdie chances.

He converted eight of them thanks to nerveless putting - not always the case for him in recent months - as he looked as impressive as he has all season.

Woods sit two shots behind first-round leader Seung-Yul Noh. Nine birdies highlighted the Korean's bogey-free round as he moved to nine-under, one stroke clear of Chris Kirk at the top of the leaderboard.

Although Woods' performance will have sent a shiver of fear down the spine of European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, there was better news for him elsewhere: Rory McIlrory shot an impressive 65, while Ian Poulter and Luke Donald both went well and sit at four-under, one ahead of Lee Westwood.

Graeme McDowell (three-over) and Justin Rose (four-over) were not so successful, however.
