South Korea's Jiyai Shin took an iron grip on the Women's British Open, as an eight-under 64 handed her a five-shot lead over the field at the halfway stage at Royal Liverpool.

High winds on Friday forced play to be halted, but easier conditions greeted the players at the weekend and Shin cashed in in impressive style. Her 64 was four shots better than any other round and she is clear of compatriot Inbee Park, while Australian Karrie Webb and Japan's Mika Miyazato are shot further back.

"I think it's the best round I've ever played," she said. "My goal was one under every single day, so eight under - wow. I can't believe it."

Shin only made it into the competition at the 11th hour, having won a play-off on Monday.

The leading Brit in the field is Holly Clyburn, tied for 17th on one-over - the same score as Michelle Wie, but it was a poor day for Laura Davies on her 100th major appearance. Davies was 10-over when she withdrew 10 holes into her second round with an ankle injury.
