Darren Clarke has admitted his upturn in fortunes on the course may prompt him to pull out of the race to be Europe's Ryder Cup captain in 2014.

Clarke is believed to be in a two-horse race alongside Paul McGinley to take the reins at Gleneagles, although 2010 captain Colin Montgomerie has emerged from the shadows by saying he would take it on again if offered.

USA have already named Tom Watson as their captain and a European decision is imminent.

Clarke has had a torrid time since winning the Open in 2011 but is starting to show improvement. And with that in mind, he said: "I played my best golf for about 18 months towards the end of last year.

"If they asked me to do it in Gleneagles it would be a difficult decision."
