Ian Poulter has handed the European Tour's flagship BMW PGA Championship a boost by confirming his participation at Wentworth.

Poulter has not played in the event for the past couple of years, but a number of leading figures in European golf have been lured back by the changes made to the West Course by Ernie Els. Padraig Harrington gave the thumbs-up after practicing on the course last week and Poulter will add further quality to the event which starts on May 27.

"I am delighted to be playing again," Poulter said. "It is a great championship and I am looking forward to checking out the modifications to the West Course which Ernie has undertaken. I am sure the changes will be for the better."

Paul Casey is the defending champion and he is relishing the prospect of the new challenge on offer. "I'm intrigued to see what Ernie's done and how the greens perform, but I know with two par fives to finish we are going to have fun and excitement," Casey told the European Tour's website. "Anything can happen and that's the beauty of Wentworth.

"Just stand in the middle of the first fairway and look back at the tee and that famous clubhouse and it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck."
