McIlroy 'happy' with his game

Rory McIlroy is delighted to be back playing at the scene of his maiden PGA Tour triumph at the Wells Fargo Championship - and has revealed he is happy with the state of his game.

McIlroy endured a difficult start to the year as he struggled for form with new Nike equipment after signing a multi-million pound deal with the sports brand, and lost his top spot in the world rankings to Tiger Woods.

However, the 23-year-old has rediscovered his touch, demonstrated by finishing second at the Valero Texas Open to Martin Laird, and during the first half of The Masters at Augusta in April.

And McIlroy is confident where his game is currently at - despite a blip at the first major of the year where he put himself out of contention with a 79 in round three. "My game at The Masters was good, I just had a bad stretch of holes which put me out of the tournament," he said.

"If I eliminated that, it would have been a different story. But I'm happy with where my game's at."

The world No. 2 claimed victory by four strokes over Phil Mickelson at Quail Hollow in Charlotte three years ago, and in 2012 the Northern Irishman was beaten in a play-off by Rickie Fowler. With two solid performances at the event, McIlroy hopes a first win of the year will arrive this week in North Carolina.

"I'm always excited to come back here," McIlroy, who has collected five Tour wins since the maiden win, including two majors at the US Open and the PGA Championship, said.

"This is a place that I really enjoy. I love the golf course. I think it's probably one of the best run tournaments of the year. They make you feel really welcome, and obviously, good memories here from my first win on the PGA Tour. [I'm] happy to be back, excited and looking forward to getting going this week."
