So that's the secret!

Billy Horschel carded the best round of the day on Friday, a scarcely believable three-under par effort of 67. The secret? Hitting all 18 greens in regulation.

The last recorded occurrence in the US Open, according to the USGA? 1973 - when Johnny Miller managed it.

"I didn't know I hit every green until I walked off 18," Horschel said. "It's a cool thing but, like I said, it's not the first time I've hit all 18 greens. I've done it plenty of times in my career.

"Obviously it's at a US Open, but I think the softness of the greens helped that."

The confidence! The arrogance! A tenner says he does not repeat the feat on Saturday…

Address the ball, start the backswing … WAIT, WHAT?!?

Now, you don't see this very often. Remarkable reactions from Mr. Pettersson.

Just not good enough

Bookies were offering 20/1 odds that Dufner either smiled or grimaced this week. He was 4/15 to just not react to anything at all the entire week (true story).

So this was unexpected:

Never a truer word spoken

On the fifth, Adam Scott - the committed anchorer - saw approximately his 124th putt of the day slide past the cup. "Use a real putter next time," came the cry from the gallery.

On this occasion, it was hard to argue with the wiseacre.
