Superb Spieth storms Congressional

Teenage sensation Jordan Spieth carded a superb second-round 66 to race into the lead at the AT&T National before inclement weather stopped play at Congressional.

Spieth, 19, rolled in five birdies in the opening nine holes to make the turn in 31, before coming home in level par to reach the halfway stage at seven-under par, where he joins 18-hole leader Roberto Castro, who recorded a 69.

Earlier this year, Castro led the Players Championship after a nine-under 63 in the opening round before falling away after a 78 the following day.

"I learned a lot [at the Players] and realised that one round doesn't mean anything," Castro said. "You just have to keep going and I was able to do that today.

"It feels good to play two rounds under par. [Congressional] is a very hard golf course."

Spieth, playing on a sponsor exemption, has had four top tens in his 13 starts this season - and if he were to go on to win would become the fourth youngest winner PGA Tour of all time. But the young Texan isn't getting carried away.

"You start to feel nerves when you're at the top of the leaderboard and I was able to channel them nicely," he said. "It didn't affect my ball striking and I had a few putts that just stayed out and I'll be looking for them to fall tomorrow. There are plenty of birdies to be made out there."

Lee Hwan-Dong also carded a 66 to move into a tie for third at five-under with Andres Romero, who had played 13 holes when the hooter went to suspend play.

Cameron Tringale and James Driscoll were also among the finishers, carding 67 and 69 respectively to share fifth place at four-under, with Gary Woodland, Stewart Cink, Russell Henley and David Lingmerth a shot back.

Poor weather has been the story of the PGA Tour so far this season, with almost every event suspended at one point of another due to storms.
