Former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher is in a "critical condition" after suffering a suspected heart attack.

Gallacher, 64, led Europe to Ryder Cup glory in 1995, and was admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Thursday night after he collapsed when due to make a speech at an event.

A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian said Gallacher was "in a critical condition", while his nephew Stephen Gallacher, who was taking part at the Wales Open but withdrew on Friday with a back problem, said: "I understand that he is critical but stable.

"My family is in disarray at the moment and it is obviously a worrying situation. We are all anxious."
