Rose given life membership of European Tour

Justin Rose's career on the European Tour began with 21 missed cuts, but now it will never end.

The Englishman has been given honorary life membership of the Tour to commemorate his achievement in becoming the first English winner of the US Open in 43 years last June. Rose held off Jason Day and Phil Mickelson on a dramatic final day to repeat the success of Tony Jacklin in 1970.

"This is really an incredible honour," said Rose. "For a kid who started his career with 21 missed cuts, I guess this means an awful lot really. And the whole journey could not have been done without all the hard work of the European Tour.

"It's been a great journey. There are many, many fantastic players who have done so much for European golf who have received this honour, so it would be wonderful for me to be able to do the same.

"I've got a lot of great golf ahead of me, I hope, and a lot of great golf on the European Tour ahead of me. So I look forward to living up to this honour."

Both Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell were afforded the same honour for their US Open triumphs in 2011 and 2010 respectively, and there are 47 honorary life members of the European Tour in total, including Jacklin himself.
