Westwood says US Open is his best chance yet

Lee Westwood believes that the US Open at Pebble Beach represents his best chance to date of ending his long wait for a first major title.

World No. 3 Westwood arrives at the tournament with momentum behind him, having triumphed at the St Jude Classic in Memphis on Sunday - his first win on US soil in 12 years.

He can also boast top-three finishes in each of the last three majors, justifying his status as one of the favourites for the June 17 tournament.

Although there are still doubts in some quarters over his mental resilience - he was unable to hold off Phil Mickelson's charge at the Masters in April - Westwood insists that he can maintain his composure when pressure is at its most intense.

"Having gone as close as I did at [the Masters], I'm entitled to look forward to a big week at the US Open," he said. "When I looked at the four majors, I felt straightaway that Pebble Beach would offer me my best chance this year.

"I was fifth the last time the US Open was played at Pebble, in 2000. I left a few shots out there in 2000 with some bad decision-making, so I know I can play the course. And my course management is far better these days.

"I love the way the USGA sets up their courses to test your accuracy and your long game. The rough is pretty severe again and that should work in my favour. I like the course, the set-up - and I like the way I'm playing."
