Tiger Woods aimed a swipe at the Pebble Beach greens after he kicked off the first round of his 2010 US Open campaign with an uninspiring three-over-par 74 on Thursday.

Woods, who won the tournament by 15 shots a decade ago, looked strong off the tee during the opening round but his putting left a lot to be desired. Not once did he hole anything above four foot all day.

The world No. 1 is already trailing the leading pack by five shots, but he insists the blame rests with the Pebble Beach greens. Composed of poa, the grass becomes long by the afternoon, which did not work in the favour of Woods, who teed off at 1.36pm.

"It was so bouncy out there," Woods said in the Mercury News. "The greens are just awful. It is what it is ... poa in the afternoon. You can't leave yourself a second putt.

"This (year) is a completely different design, a complete redo from when we played. The holes are much different, and the bunkering is much different. A few of the tees are totally different."

On a day when one of Woods' alleged mistresses, Devon James, reportedly asked a US judge to demand a paternity test of the American, Nike's prized asset did encounter one awkward taunt from a 'fan'. Following a tee shot at the ninth, the rogue voice reacted to Woods' claims that his personal life was nobody's business by shouting: "Tiger, it is our business!"

After his first bogey followed on the same hole, Woods was asked if the taunt threw him from his game.

"No, God, no," he replied.
