World No. 1 Tiger Woods is feeling positive about the future despite missing out on the chance to win his 15th major title at the US Open.

The 34-year-old moved into the last day of action at Pebble Beach trailing the lead by five shots after firing a third-round 66 - his lowest 18-hole score since returning from a self-imposed break from the game.

A four-over-par final-round 75 saw Woods, who parted company with swing coach Hank Haney after the Masters, slip out of contention but a fourth-place finish and four days of competitive action have boosted the 14-time major champion's confidence ahead of a busy summer.

"I feel like I can play now," Woods said. "I got a feel for my game, my shape of my shots, what I'm working on, and the two major championships I finished I had a chance to win both of them. So it's not too bad.

"I feel like I put some pieces together this week. It's a process. It's a long process, but I've put some of it together, and I hit some shots this week that I haven't hit in a long time."
