Seve Ballesteros has announced that he has pulled out of the past champions' tournament on the eve of the Open Championship.

The Spaniard had reportedly accepted an invitation to play in a four-hole challenge on July 14 at St. Andrews to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Open.

But now he has decided to withdraw on medical grounds - the 53-year-old has had health problems since suffering a brain tumour in 2008.

"I am aware that there might be people who have been preparing their trip to encourage and cheer me up," he said.

"I do not want to disappoint anyone at the last minute and after listening to the doctors I have taken the difficult decision not to travel to St Andrews."

Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Nick Faldo are among those who will be taking part in the tournament.
