England's Justin Rose remains on course for back-to-back victories in America after he produced a flawless round on day two of the Travelers Championship to snatch the outright lead.

The world No. 33, who earned his maiden PGA Tour triumph at Memorial earlier this month, carded an eight-under 62 - one stroke off the course record - to leave him 13 below par for the tournament.

It was a masterclass on the greens from Rose, who required just 26 putts across a bogey-free round that featured five successive birdies between nine and 15.

He is four strokes ahead of Kevin Sutherland, and five ahead of a four-strong group - Vijay Singh, Bill Lunde, Corey Pavin and Charlie Wi - at nine under.

Padraig Harrington had to endure fluctuating fortunes - three birdies, four bogeys - as he failed to emulate the form that had seen him race into a share of the first-day lead. A series of wayward approach shots let the Irishman down during his one-over 71, which keeps him at six under for the tournament.

Two-time major winner Retief Goosen, who is at three under after a 69, narrowly avoided being cut after difficulties with the putter saw him struggle to pick up strokes on day two in Conneticut.
