McIlroy misses cut at Irish Open

Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Irish Open for the second year in a row after losing out by one shot at Fota Island.

The former world No.1 struggled on Thursday as he hit a three-over 74 in an opening round which included six bogeys and three birdies, leaving himself with plenty of work to do in order to make the cut.

On Friday, the Northern Irishman carded a two-under 69, but it was not enough as he missed the cut by one shot.

World No.6 McIlroy, the highest ranked player in the field, made an eagle on the 10th hole and carded six birdies. However, a double bogey on the fourth hole as well as four bogeys ended the slim hopes McIlroy had of making it to the weekend of the event.

"It's frustrating," McIlroy said. "I left myself with a lot of work today after yesterday and today making six birdies and an eagle, there's a lot of mistakes in there."

Shane Lowry, who won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009, also missed the cut, as did Tommy Fleetwood, Matteo Manassero, Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and Ryder Cup hopeful Stephen Gallacher.

Miko Ilonen tops the leaderboard on 10-under and is two shots clear of home-favourite Graeme McDowell and Robert Rock.
