Graeme McDowell fell short in his bid for a maiden Irish Open triumph as he finished three shots behind winner Mikko Ilonen at Fota Island.

Finland's Ilonen secured a fourth European Tour title by completing a wire-to-wire victory with a final-round 70 on Sunday.

Italy's Edoardo Molinari shot 67 to take second place on 12 under, one stroke back from Ilonen while local favorite McDowell posted a 71 to tie for sixth.

"One of the worst putting.rounds as a weekend of my career as regards being in contention," said McDowell. "I let a lot slip away yesterday and continued in the same vein today. I kind of got in that mode where I was starting to search a bit on the greens, over-reading, over-technicalising.

"I'm very disappointed. I did the tee-to-green stuff. Gave myself the opportunities coming in but just couldn't get the ball in the hole.

"Really disappointed but what a fantastic week. A great Irish Open, great fans and I'm just disappointed I couldn't do a little bit better for them."

Molinari, along with English duo Danny Willett and Matthew Baldwin, secured the three spots available for next month's Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

Willett and Baldwin finished in a share of third place with Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg on 11 under.

English teenager Matt Fitzpatrick, the only amateur to make the cut in the US Open last week, shot a closing 68 to tie for 29th in his first tournament as a professional.
