Colin Montgomerie began his bid for a second Senior major by setting the early pace at the US Senior Open at Oak Tree in Oklahoma.

Montgomerie picked up eight birdies en route to a six-under 65 in the opening round to hold a clubhouse lead of one shot from American Marco Dawson.

Having famously gone without one of the regular majors in his time on the European and PGA Tours, Montgomerie broke his duck in the senior equivalents last month by winning the Senior PGA in May. Now he is hoping to add to his collection at the first time of asking.

"You can only lose it the first day, you can't really win it, but I look forward to keeping that momentum going through the next three days," Montgomerie said.

"It's going to be very difficult, it's going to get very hot, touching 100 degress [fahrenheit], if not more, which for a fair-haired Scot is not ideal!"

Bernhard Langer carded a 2-under 69 but only eight players amongst the early starters managed to come in under par.
