Senior Ryder Cup tipped for 2015

A senior version of the Ryder Cup could be played as early as next year, according to Golfweek.

The magazine claims both European and PGA Tours, as well as the PGA of America, are locked in talks to get the Senior Ryder Cup from pipe dream to reality.

Details such as the venue have yet to be worked out - though the inaugural version would be played in the US - but all parties are keen to get it off the ground as soon as possible. There even is a sponsor already in the fold.

The event is expected to be teams of 10, not 12 like the original version, and there would be 20 points to play for, not 28, with five team matches on Friday and Saturday and 10 singles matches on Sunday.

Nick Faldo, captain of the 2008 European team, said: "I think if the guys are playing, competitive, and want to do it, that would be kind of cool."

Tom Watson, who will lead the US side at Gleneagles in September, is also behind the idea.

"I'd be too old to play in it," said 64-year-old Watson. "But again, hell, maybe I could captain it, you know?"

When asked if he would be interested, Miguel Angel Jimenez, who turned 50 earlier this year, said: "Of course," he said. "It would be very nice. Bueno."

An announcement is expected to be made at the PGA Championship in August.
