Golf legend Arnold Palmer had successful pacemaker implant surgery on Monday to correct an abnormal heartbeat.

The 84-year-old Palmer, who had the procedure done at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, will remain there for observation overnight and is expected to be released on Tuesday.

Palmer took part in an exhibition with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player on August 2 as part of the Champions Tour's 3M Championship in Minneapolis. Palmer, however, did not play due to a back injury.

"He was not feeling up to par for a day or two and went to see the doctor on Thursday," Palmer's assistant, Doc Giffin, said on Monday. "The doctor sent him into Pittsburgh the next morning."
