Rory McIlroy says he wants to become a sporting legend like Lionel Messi and Roger Federer.

After an incredible summer that saw him secure back-to-back majors at the Open and the US PGA Championship, McIlroy narrowly missed out on the FedEx Cup title and the £6.1 million bonus that goes with it last week, finishing runner-up to American Billy Horschel.

However, a remarkable season, which has also included victories at the BMW Championship and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, has seen the 25-year-old reclaim his world No.1 status and become the third youngest player - behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, no less - to win four majors.

"Star power is what drives sport," McIlroy told The Times. "Messi, Federer - those guys are the pinnacle.

"Look at Federer with 17 slams and years of being world No.1. I've got four. I have a way to go, but I'm on the right path."

McIlroy readily admits that his aim is to be "one of the best that's ever played" but knows he is a long way from attaining such status.

"I don't need another year like this one," McIlroy added. "I need another 10."

McIlroy had complained of feeling fatigued after the final round of the FedEx Cup play-offs at the Tour Championship and is planning on taking a break until Sunday, ahead of the start of the Ryder Cup next week.

"Physically I was OK, but mentally I was tired and ready to see the back of my golf clubs," he said. "It's been relentless.

"When I get to Gleneagles at least I'll be somewhat refreshed."

Given his recent success, McIlroy also knows he will be a potential scalp for Tom Watson's American team, but is relishing the pressure.

"Tom Watson says they are targeting [Ian] Poulter and myself," McIlroy said. "It's a huge compliment to be singled out and I'm glad. I'm relishing that role. I want to play well and lead by example. I'm not a rookie any more."
