Tiger Woods bogeyed the final hole to shoot the worst 18-hole score of his pro career with an 82 at the Phoenix Open on Friday, missing the cut for the second consecutive event.

It is just the 13th time worldwide in his career that he has failed to qualify for the final 36 holes.

And it was only the second time in his career that Woods failed to break 80. He shot an 81 during a wind-blown third round at Muirfield during the 2002 Open Championship.

Woods' first nine at TPC Scottsdale also matched the worst nine-hole stretch of his career. He had a double-bogey and a triple-bogey on consecutive holes en route to a 44.

Playing in just his second event since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in August, Woods' performance was nonetheless surprising. He spoke positively and confidently before the tournament about improvements he made in his game and said there were no physical issues after an injury-plagued 2014.

Now Woods, ranked 47th in the world, is projected to fall out of the top 50 with this result. The lowest he has ever fallen since first going to No.1 in 1997 was 58th in late 2011. He got back to the No.1 ranking in 2013 and held it until May of last year, when he was out following back surgery.

After an opening-round 73, Woods unravelled over his first nine holes on Friday - the back nine at TPC Scottsdale - while making a triple-bogey, a double-bogey and three bogeys.

He added another double-bogey on the front side at the par-three fourth hole - he made a double there on Thursday - and then birdied the fifth, which is one of the hardest holes on the course, for the second straight day.

The chipping woes that were apparent in December were in play on Thursday, and then a couple of errant drives led to his problems on Friday. When he did give himself birdie chances early in the round, he failed to convert.

Woods holds the record with 142 consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour, which he accomplished from 1998 through 2005. It remains one of the more underrated feats in his 79-victory, 14-major career.

His missed cut at the PGA in August was just his fourth in a major. He also missed the cut last year at the Quicken Loans National - his first tournament following back surgery.

The Hero World Challenge in December was an unofficial PGA Tour event with no cut, and Woods tied for last in that field.

"Physically, I'm fine,'' Woods said after the first round on Thursday. "I feel great. Mentally, I'm a little bit tired from the grind of trying to piece together a round.''

By falling out of the top 50, Woods is in danger of missing the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March. He'll need to be in the top 50 in either of the two weeks preceding the event.

Woods is scheduled to play next week's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he has won eight times in his career. He shot a third-round 79 last year and missed the secondary, 54-hole cut.
