Lee Westwood has quelled fears over his fitness by promising to be "even better" than 100% when the Ryder Cup gets underway at Celtic Manor in October.

The world No. 3 played 18 holes for the first time in six weeks on Wednesday - hitting six birdies and an eagle - having been sidelined with a leg injury since the Bridgestone Invitational at the start of August.

European captain Colin Montgomerie had contemplated taking an extra player - most likely Paul Casey - to the Ryder Cup, such were his concerns about Westwood's physical condition.

But Westwood has told the skipper that there will be no need to call for reinforcements - and that he is feeling no-ill effects after making his long-awaited return to the course.

"I am going to be 100 per cent on October 1 - maybe even a bit better," Westwood said. "I am fitter and stronger than I was before I was injured. If I was like 100% in January, I feel I was down to 80-85% by May. But now, because of this enforced break, I feel I'm back to 100%.

"I texted Monty today to say 'everything is going to be fine and I will be ready. You won't need to take a 13th man to Celtic Manor'.

"There are no after-effects [following the 18 holes at Lindrick Golf Club]. I am not pushing it - my fitness trainer Steve McGregor thinks I'd be ready to play right now."
