Padraig Harrington claims he is even more fired up for the Ryder Cup after having to rely on a captain's pick to seal his place in the team.

Harrington is a veteran of five Ryder Cups, but after a title drought lasting over two years, he failed to qualify for the European team automatically. The three-time Major champion had to wait for captain Colin Montgomerie's wildcard choices, and he knows he will be under pressure to justify his place in the team.

"When you get picked you are under the spotlight more," Harrington admitted. "You have something to prove; in many ways you're trying to justify it. There's definitely more pressure, but pressure brings a bit more adrenaline, more nerves, more focus."

As the reigning US PGA and Open champion, Harrington was on a rich vein of form heading to Valhalla two years ago, but picked up just half a point from an available four. But the Irishman believes his lack of silverware this season has only served to motivate him and he will be desperate to end the season on a high.

"I was flat then. Whatever happens this time I don't think I'm going to be flat," he said. "I'm hoping for the Ryder Cup to be my peak this year. I'm working towards that and definitely there's a sense of expectation.

"When you get picked you are up for everything. You kind of want to get there extra early. You want to go the extra step. Last time I was tired and wanted to do my own thing."
