After missing out on a place in Colin Montgomerie's European Team for the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, Justin Rose has expressed his determination to make the 12-man squad when the biennial event returns in 2012.

Rose, along with fellow Englishman Paul Casey, missed out on a captain's pick, with Montgomerie opting for the trio of Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Italy's Edoardo Molinari.

After a sluggish start to the season, Rose won two tournaments in the space of three weeks on American soil to make him a prime candidate for a wildcard pick. But he failed to build on his two victories and, coupled with the fabulous late-season form of Donald and Molinari, he ultimately missed out on what would have been his second appearance in the Ryder Cup.

Putting aside his personal disappointment, however, he was quick to throw his support behind Europe's Ryder Cup line-up.

"If nothing else, my absence will make me even more determined to get onto the team in 2012," he said in The Times. "In the meantime, I shall be at Celtic Manor in spirit, cheering on the boys. I predict a close win for Europe. The score? 15-13.

"Unfortunately, this time around, it was not to be. Things did not quite work out the way I had planned in the end - as everybody knows - I missed out on a captain's pick. Poults [Ian Poulter] is going to have to do it without me this time!

"I was hugely disappointed at the time, but that is what can happen when you end up relying on a wildcard - it doesn't always go your way. In the end there were five good players chasing three spots.

"It was a shame that I didn't get the job done, but other guys played well and deserved their spots."

Although Rose lauded the efforts of Martin Kaymer and Molinari, he did admit he thought he had done enough to be included in the team.

"A couple of weeks before the announcement, it looked as if it would be me, Paul Casey and Padraig Harrington, which would have been pretty easy for Monty. Then Martin Kaymer knocked Luke Donald off the world points list by winning the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and it got a little trickier. And then it got even messier for all of us when Edoardo put in such a huge run at the end," he said.

"Make no mistake, though, he fully deserves his place. I can't wait to see how he and Francesco, his brother, play together. How exciting is that for the Ryder Cup?"
