Phil Mickelson has admitted he needs to find some consistency if he is to realise his ambition of becoming world No. 1.

The left hander was widely expected to knock Tiger Woods from the top of the tree, but he was pipped by Lee Westwood following a string of indifferent displays.

Mickelson is still within hailing distance of the top spot and victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai this week would see him do that. The Sheshan International course suits Mickelson's eye, having won the event 12 months ago, and he is looking to strike form this week.

"I would love to do that," he said in response to a question about becoming world No. 1. "But the only way to do that is to play good golf and the only way to do that is not to worry about it and make some birdies.

"This is a tournament with a lot of ranking points and a course I have played well at in the past so I feel I can put a good week together. If I can do that it will help my chances."
