Lee Westwood has fired a warning to his rivals for the world No. 1 spot by insisting he felt "a bit rusty" after firing an opening 66 at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

Westwood has been battling with a leg problem since the summer and was making his return to action following a short break. During his spell on the sidelines he rose to No. 1 in the world, but his grip on the position is far from secure with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Martin Kaymer breathing down his neck.

A win for any of the chasing pack in Shanghai would knock Westwood off his perch, but he made a fine return to action by moving to within one shot of leader Francesco Molinari and feels there is more in the tank.

"It feels a bit rusty to be perfectly honest," Westwood told Sky Sports. "But I was still quite in control.

"I drove the ball well and the final two drives were fantastic. I did not expect to get up on eight in two but hit five wood in which was great and to roll one in on the last for birdie was great.

"It is up to me to focus and play well this week and today I managed to do that. If you are the No. 1 player in the world then you have to play well."
