Tiger Woods will play alongside a US army officer in the Dubai Desert Classic pro-am on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Rowells, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, beat 16,000 other amateur golfers in a draw to play with the former world No. 1.

Woods' father Earl served in the US Army and toured Vietnam and named his son after a South Vietnamese army colleague who fought with him.

Rowells, who plays off a nine handicap, will join Woods and two other amateurs in a four-ball during Wednesday's pro-am on the Majlis course.

"I am thrilled and can't believe my luck," Rowells said. "I registered with little hope of actually being selected.

"What a shock I received when I was contacted by my wife with the news that I have won. I immediately had visions of the first tee with Tiger. Truly a dream come true."
