Alvaro Quiros was the first player to book his place in the last 16 of the World Match Play Championship in Spain with a comprehensive 5&4 victory over Soren Kjeldsen.

After seeing off fellow big-hitter Paul Casey on Thursday, Quiros showed no signs of a dip in form in his final group game against the Dane - holing his approach shot into the 15th for an eagle two that clinched a 5&4 triumph.

Quiros will now put his feet up, as Kjeldsen and Casey face off to decide which player will also join him in the last 16.

Elsewhere, Ian Poulter is through to the next round as long as there is a winner in the final group game between Paul Lawrie and Francesco Molinari, after he secured his second successive half of the event against Lawrie.

Both men had chances to win the contest, but Poulter missed a ten-foot putt up the last to take the victory - leaving open the possibility of a three-way sudden death playoff this evening if Molinari and Lawrie also finish all-square in their game.

The same cannot be said for Ryan Moore, however, whose exit sees the end of any American involvement in the tournament after Ross Fisher fought back from three down with four to play to win at the 18th.

The Englishman will now face compatriot Luke Donald in the afternoon to decide who tops the group.

Nicolas Colsaerts and Rory McIlroy are both through to the next round, after the Belgian beat Retief Goosen one-up to knock the South African out of the competition, while YE Yang is also heading home after Seung-yul Noh emulated Martin Kaymer in clinching a 2&1 victory over his fellow South Korean.

2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen is another major casuality, Goosen's compatriot falling to one-time PGA Tour winner Jhonattan Vegas by a slim one-hole margin that was nonetheless enough to send him home after Graeme McDowell's victory yesterday.

McDowell and Vegas will play later to decide who tops their group.

One of the big winners on Thursday, Miguel Angel Jimenez, undid some of his good work in falling to a 2&1 defeat to Johan Edfors, meaning the Spaniard will have to hope his vanquisher will also defeat Charl Schwartzel this afternoon if the trio are to avoid a three-way sudden death playoff.

At least he can still progress, however, unlike Anders Hansen who is another player who can book his flights home, after losing a close-fought match to Aaron Baddeley.

The Australian takes on Lee Westwood this afternoon, but again only for bragging rights with both already into the next round.
