David Toms secured his 13th PGA Tour title and first for five years after holding off the challenge of Charlie Wi to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Toms, who lost in a play-off last week against KJ Choi at the Players Championship, shrugged off the disappointment of seeing a seven-shot lead wiped out on Saturday to sign for a final-round 67 and finish on 15-under-par - one stroke ahead of Wi.

Wi got off to a cracking start, draining back-to-back birdies to tighten his grip at the top of the leaderboard. He soon lost his way, however, allowing a determined Toms to slowly play his way back into contention. Toms rolled in a birdie putt just inside 15 feet at the par-four 14th to take his lead over Wi to three shots with four holes remaining. Wi refused to lie down, pegging him back by picking up a vital birdie at 16th to keep his title aspirations alive. A bogey at 17 showed Toms was feeling the nerves but Wi failed to drain his birdie putt at the last, handing Toms a first PGA crown since 2006.

American Bo Van Pelt finished with a flourish, shooting an action-packed 65 to claim third place. A birdie at the first helped to put a spring in his step before seven consecutive pars checked his progress. A bogey before the turn seemed to spark him into action, however, as he began the back nine with an eagle and a birdie. He was punished for another lapse in concentration but rallied late on, picking up a further three shots to finish an excellent week on 10-under.

Defending champion Zach Johnson fought to the death, producing a stunning 65 to propel him up to fourth on nine-under. Three birdies on the trot signalled he had not given up hope of defending his title but he couldn't maintain his fast start. Still, a faultless front nine and 33 shots coming in was a performance not to be sniffed at.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson was the highest placed European. A bogey-free 67 was his fourth sub-70 round of the week and enabled him to finish in a tie for fifth on eight-under, alongside Chez Reavie. Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler both finished on four-under after respective 70's and 71's.
