Rory McIlroy believes more majors may well lie in his future after the Northern Irishman blitzed the field at Congressional to pick up his first US Open title on Sunday.

"It's great to get this first major in the bag, especially after what's happened the last couple of months," he told Reuters.

McIlroy said it was a "great feeling" to recover from his collapse at The Masters in April as he sealed an eight-shot win over his nearest rival in Australian Jason Day.

"I felt like I got over the Masters pretty quickly. I was very honest with myself and I knew what I needed to do differently. To be able to finish it off the way I did, just tells me that I learned from it and I've moved on. Now I've got this, I can go ahead and concentrate on getting some more [majors]."

The 22-year-old held an eight-shot lead heading into the final day, and ultimately stayed strong to win by the same margin. His overall tally of 268 shots set a new US Open record as the lowest score in the 116 years of the tournament, shattering the previous low of 272 shots held by Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Janzen and Jim Furyk.

"I knew most of the field were going to have a hard time to catch up to the score that I was on," McIlroy said. "I'm obviously just very happy to win the US Open and to win it in a bit of style as well is always nice."
