McLaren not quick enough - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton said that McLaren was just not quick enough to finish higher than eighth position in the British Grand Prix.

Having started in eighth place, Hamilton was expected to make progress through the field and had got up to sixth on hard tyres before the first round of pit stops. He then stayed out on a longer first stint and led for a spell before pitting, but from then on he slipped back to his starting position.

Hamilton admitted his disappointment at not being able to be more competitive in front of his home crowd, but said the team had done all it could.

"It wasn't a special race to be honest," Hamilton said. "I wish we could have done more for the fans, we tried as hard as we could but we just didn't have the pace today. I don't know why - I think I was in the lead at one point wasn't I? - And I don't understand how I could be there and then go all the way back to where I started. But I pushed all the way, I did everything I could and the team also did a great job.

"From what I can understand it must have been OK but I'll have to look at it afterwards to see exactly how the strategy panned out. But in my first stint my tyres were still good and I was almost holding on to Fernando still on quite old tyres, so maybe a one stop would have been possible, who knows? I really don't know to be honest, but we did everything we could. A really, really tough race for us, really tough."

Hamilton added that McLaren would need to make improvements before the next race in Germany.

"Today we were very slow in the low speed corners, and particularly in the high speed; Michael came past me and he was really quick in the high speed. Our car doesn't feel that bad but there's must feel awesome!"
