Race

Hello and welcome to ESPN's coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the 11th round of the 2014 championship.

---

2:02:/b> Still lots of standing water at Turn 10. The cars are filtering back onto the grid. Kvyat lines up behind Hamilton in the pits.

---

---

2:00: Lots of cars slowly making it off the grid for the warm up lap and Daniil Kvyat can't even make it off the grid slot. He complains he's got no power and he will be wheeled to the pit lane. More woe for the Toro Rosso man. The rest of the field got away nicely.

---

Phil says: "It's supposed to be difficult to overtake at the Hungaroring and yet only Hamilton has won from pole. Bit of a paradox?"

Good observation. I think it's difficult to overtake 20 people in one race rather than the odd one or two! ---

1:58: Every driver starting on intermediates. The big question will be how quickly it dries and how early people pit.

---

1:56: Less than five minutes until the start of the race. The track still looks damp, the sky grey. Rain predicted to come back again in about 20 minutes.

---

1:53: I'm going to stick my neck on the line and predict a Red Bull victory this afternoon if the rain returns.

---

---

1:51: Oh Pastor. I should refrain from sharing tweets like that but it is funny.

---

---

1:50: Amazingly, that earlier stat means its been 29 races since we've seen a wet race. Wouldn't mind a few more showers later on today, if I'm honest, as it always makes for fascinating viewing.

---

1:49: Bottas tells Williams: "Turn 5, 6, 7 completely dry. Turn One and last sector is full wet. If no rain will dry quite quickly."

---

1:47: There's not been a fully wet race since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, won by Jenson Button. The Hungarian Grand Prix only been a wet race twice, in 2006 and 2011. The winner on both occasions? A certain Jenson Button.

---

1:45: If the rain does come back in this race expect a few surprises up and down the grid. It will also make it a bit easier for the likes of Raikkonen, Magnussen and Hamilton to make their way through the field from their starting positions.

---

---

1:43: Rosberg told Mercedes is not expecting rain to fall before the race. Standing water will be the main problem even though the rain has gone.

---

1:42: The radar suggests there could be rainfall any time in the next 30 minutes.

---

1:40: Rosberg, meanwhile, apparently starting on inters. The rain has stopped officially but the surface remains wet. With 20 minutes until until the start there is nothing to say the track won't dry out before the start. Bit of a headscratcher, this.

---

1:39: Hamilton meanwhile tells Mercedes its too wet for inters. Having seen what happened to Maldonado you'd be inclined to agree with him.

---

1:38: Vettel tells Red Bull: "Turns 5, 6,7 completely dry. Turn 8 wet again, and Turn 9 wet as well. Intermediate tyres."

Looks like the champion will be starting on the green-striped tyre. Will be interesting to see what others choose.

---

1:37: Can't imagine that will help Maldonado very much in this race, he went bouncing across the grass and was lucky to avoid a wall.

---

1:35: Looks like full wets will be the start tyre this afternoon. Lots of spray and standing water around. Seeing a replay of Pastor Maldonado and Sergio Perez running wide on their outlaps. Many returning to the pits so they can get another lap to get used to the conditions.

1:33: Another man up against it will be Kimi Raikkonen, who was victim of an absolutely almighty blunder by Ferrari in Q1. After setting times on the medium tyre, Ferrari kept Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso in the garage in the hope of saving soft tyres. There was plenty of time to be found and Raikkonen tumbled down the order and below Jules Bianchi - the man who one day may well be driving at Ferrari.

Kimi has six podiums and one race win to his name here so this race would have been a great opportunity for him to get a strong result before the summer break.

1:31: So Kevin Magnussen and Lewis Hamilton start in the pit lane this afternoon, in that order. Magnussen was unfortunate to spin out on the wet track at the start of Q3, while Hamilton's bad luck returned with an engine fire in Q1. Both have an uphill battle for a strong finish today with overtaking notoriously tricky around here.

---

1:30: There was an almighty shower not long ago which eased almost as quickly as it started, but the threat of this rain is certainly hanging over this afternoon's race. Could make for a fascinating contest.

Lap 1

Rosberg gets away well and leads into Turn 1, Vettel has a good start but gets caught on the outside of his fellow German on the lead into Turn 1. Bottas takes advantage and gets up into P2 ahead of Vettel. Alonso up to third too.

Hamilton spins out at Turn 2 with his cold brakes but manages to get going again. Remember he didn't have the benefit of a warm-up lap.

Vettel gets back past Alonso for third.

Lap 2

Hamilton complains his brakes just gave up on him. He's still ahead of Kvyat.

Coming into Turn 1 Alonso nearly catches the back of Vettel but manages to avoid the back of the Red Bull. Button had a look but couldn't take advantage.

Raikkonen had a good start, he's already up to 13th from 16th on the grid.

Lap 3

Rosberg already four seconds ahead of Bottas. Hamilton complaining of brake issues in his Mercedes once again.

Button and Hulikenberg really well placed at the moment.

Seeing a replay again, Ricciardo had a really bad start off the line.

Lap 4

Rosberg's lead now nearly six seconds and he's set another fastest lap, a 1:44.422.

Hamilton tells Mercedes: "Still a lot of vibrations from somewhere."

Vettel getting quite close to Bottas now, he's within half a second of the fast-starting Williams. DRS enabled now.

Lap 5

Rosberg is absolutely cruising out in front.

Gutierrez, Grosjean and Bianchi all had off-track moments on the last lap.

Looks like we could be in for more rain in five minutes. JEV told it's very important to look after his rear tyres with that rain in mind.

Lap 6

Vettel visibly closer behind Bottas as both wobble through the final corner but he can't get close enough with the DRS to pass the Finn. Hamilton has another off-track moment at the top of the hill.

Lap 7

Hamilton lapping two seconds quicker than some of the cars around him.

Rosberg runs wide at Turn 1 after setting another fastest lap, a 1:43.046. He's building a huge lead so moments like that won't concern him too much. Bottas still holding off Vettel very well. Button's mirrors are also full of Daniel Ricciardo.

Lap 8

Ricciardo closes the gap up to Button hugely but can't get close enough.

Hamilton sweeps by Raikkonen on the pit straight for 13th, he holds it nicely and makes it stick. Those problems he was complaining about must not be too bad. Looks like that move started when Raikkonen ran a bit wide at the penultimate corner.

Lap 9

Big, big crash for Marcus Ericsson and the Safety Car comes out immediately.

Into the pits come the rest of the field, slick tyres going on Ricciardo! Looks like Rosberg just missed the pit window and carried on going round.

Ericsson walks away from his Caterham which is good to see. Absolute chaos in the pit lane. Gutierrez and Perez go down the pit lane wheel-to-wheel. The Mexicans come out racing on the slicks and it looks so slippery! Perez comes out of Turn 1 in front of Gutierrez.

On the replay it looks like Ericsson just lost it coming up to the approach to the hill.

Button the only man to stay on the intermediates.

Lap 10

Rosberg, Bottas, Vettel and Alonso, who all missed the pit stop window, come into the pits now. Rosberg comes out behind a large group of cars and I think Ricciardo is now the leader of this race!

Both McLarens on intermediates. Big, big gamble there. If it rains again they could be in a great position this afternoon.

The new order: Ricciardo, Button, Massa, Magnussen, Rosberg, Vergne, Vettel. I love rain.

Lap 11

The safety car is still out this lap. Really big dry line appearing on the circuit now. Not perfect for those two cars on intermediates. Button just told McLaren "let's hope the weather forecast is right!"

Grosjean has dropped it in Turn 3 as well, the same place Ericsson went out. That means the safety car will stay out for a few more laps. Good news for the McLarens.

Lap 12

Looks like a bit of smoke from Rosberg's brake ducts on the rears. He asks Mercedes whether he should keep using the brakes.

Replay shows Grosjean just got on the kerb and lost it at around the same place Ericsson did, but instead of going off the track on the left he slid across to the other side and into the tyres. Expect a few more laps behind Safety Car.

Grosjean tells Lotus: "I'm Ok, but we speak too much on the radio."

Other teams telling its drivers there may be no more rain for half an hour! Have McLaren made a huge mistake with this call. Button apparently starting to doubt the decision on the radio a bit...

Lap 13

"How does it look, the weather? If we think it's going to rain, we're in the right place, but..." says Button.

Worth noting that Magnussen did not pit at all, hence why he is so far up the circuit. But he's on his original set of inters as well. He probably knows he had nothing to lose from where he started.

Safety Car in this lap.

Lap 14

Safety Car in and Ricciardo gets a good run down the pit straight. Button goes up the inside on the intermediates and into first! Ricciardo powerless on the slick tyre.

But Button is now told rain is looking less likely, and that he needs to push.

Alonso has also got by Vettel into P7. Hamilton now behind the reigning champion as well. Perez runs very wide and lets Vettel through. Hamilton stormed from 13th to ninth in those opening few corners.

Lap 15

Rosberg tries it round the outside of Magnussen but the intermediates allow the McLaren to stay ahead and Vergne jumps in front of Rosberg too! Hamilton now one car behind Rosberg, the championship leader falling back as he's also let Alonso by him.

Ricciardo all over the back of Button but the McLaren dives into the pits for new tyres.

Lap 16

Massa sets a fastest lap, a 1:36. 584.

Rosberg tries to make a move stick on Vergne but runs wide again and the Frenchman keeps the place by diving back down the inside. Vettel now all over the back of Rosberg and Hamilton sitting patiently in the wings behind. Thrilling stuff.

Hulkenberg has stopped at the final turn. Hulkenberg is out of the car and that's the first non-points scoring finish for him this season.

Looks like Hulkenberg collected Perez while trying to get by.

Lap 17

One man who is absolutely flying is Alonso, and he sets a fastest lap, a 1:32.838. What a race this is shaping up to be.Button, who briefly led, is down in 18th. Huge gamble from McLaren and he won't be too chuffed about how it turned out.

Lap 18

Ricciardo now sets the fastest lap, a 1:31. 509.

Hamilton not close enough to take Vettel into Turn 1, Vettel six tenths off Rosberg. The day isn't shaping up to be too bad for Hamilton at the moment.

Maldonado and Grosjean have both come into the pits after colliding at Turn 1 at the last lap. Maldonado's fault that one, harsh on Bianchi, who gets out in front of the Lotus.

Lap 19

Alonso now with a fastest lap, a 1:643. He's flying.

Hearing that Ferrari had the chance to pit Alonso immediately after the Safety Car period but did not react quick enough. He would have been out in front if they'd done so. Alonso now nine tenths behind Massa and chopping the gap down.

Vergne is in an absolutely superb position as well, he deserves a lot of credit for the way he held off Rosberg earlier in this race.

Lap 20

Hamilton still not close enough to Vettel for a move at Turn 1 but he is so close to the Red Bull's tail and he looks on the inside of Turn 2 but backs out as the gap disappears. All this allowing Rosberg to edge away.

Ricciardo set a new fastest lap out in front as well, a 1:30.053. He's now five seconds in front of Massa.

Hamilton told he needs to manage his front brakes as they are getting hot.

Lap 21

Ricciardo with another fastest lap.

Vettel goes a bit too deep into Turn 1 and Hamilton has a look coming into Turn 2 but it's way too wet, Hamilton abandons the move to avoid contact.

Rosberg has cut the gap to Vergne to 2.5s.

Lap 22

Yet another fastest lap for Ricciardo, a 1:29.489. You feel Hamilton needs to clear Vettel as Rosberg appears to be labouring behind Vergne a little bit.

Lap 23

Another big shunt and it's Perez into the pit wall, sliding across the track and collecting the wall very heavily. Safety Car immediately. Perez clambers out of his car and walks away. Terrible afternoon for Force India in the rain, they may lose some valuable ground in the constructors' race.

Debris all over the track and this will cancel out Ricciardo's five-second lead out in front.

Lap 24

Ricciardo pits as the activity starts in the pit lane. Alonso stays out, interestingly. So did Vergne, Rosberg, Vettel, Hamilton.

Both Williams guys jumped into the pits and, very interestingly, Massa just took on a set of medium tyres.

Seeing a replay of Perez, he got onto the kerb and a little wide, spinning across the track and heavily into the inside wall.

Big gamble from Ferrari to keep Alonso out. He will now lead the race but we don't know how much life he can get out of those soft tyres, which are around 16 laps old.

Lap 25

Still a lot of work going on down the pit straight to clear debris.

Rosberg complains Vergne was going flat out past the area where the accident took place and asks Mercedes to tell Charlie Whiting.

Ricciardo is now behind Hamilton but on a fresh set of soft rubber. That should give him a pace advantage over that gaggle of cars.

Hamilton is told it is "critical" to get past Vettel and Vergne. Conveniently ignoring Rosberg, who is in between the pair.

Lap 26

Safety car stays out. Kobayashi has also stopped somewhere on track, I think on Turn 12. He has indeed, he's walking away from the car.

Safety car will come in at the end of this lap.

Lap 27

Alonso bolts and gets away nicely. Hamilton all over the back of Vettel through the final turn but has Ricciardo too close for comfort as well.

Hamilton told Ricciardo behind is on new tyres. In other words, watch out.

Lap 28

Alonso leads from Vergne - there's something I don't think I've ever written. Hamilton right behind Vettel but Ricciardo not as close to the Mercedes as he was last time out.

Hamilton goes purple through the first sector so he clearly understood that last message loud and clear.

Should note Bottas is also on the medium tyre, as well as Massa. They've gone the other way to the whole field and is a very risky decision for a team which has traditionally erred on the side of caution this season.

Lap 29

Alonso sets a fastest lap after a blistering final sector, he crosses in 1:29.081. Vergne dropping behind and this is perfect for Alonso, the longer Vergne stays second the bigger gap he can build.

Raikkonen has a moment and runs across the chicane, he's not having much joy getting past Gutierrez at the moment.

Lap 30

Rosberg now all over the back of Vergne and closes the gap up with DRS. Vergne making Rosberg earn the pass and the German cools it off when he gets too close. Very impressive driving from Vergne.

A huge train of cars forming behind the Toro Rosso now. Remember, Hamilton was told it's "mission critical" to dispatch Vettel but he's still four tenths down.

Lap 31

Another fastest lap for Alonso! The gap now up to 3.3 as he crosses in 1:28.439.

Rosberg still not close enough to have a go at Vergne into Turn 1.

Ricciardo told that when the cars ahead pit, "he needs to be quick at that point", and to watch the tyres until that time. Ricciardo in a really good position with everyone ahead still needing to pit one more time than him, effectively.

Lap 32

Hamilton can practically reach out and touch Vettel in front but is still unable to get past. Ricciardo appears to have backed off a little bit, he knows he just needs to let this one come to him.

Mercedes mechanics are out in the pit lane for Rosberg.

Vettel gets wide down the pit straight like Perez did but keeps it out of the wall and that will release Hamilton! Rosberg has a slow stop, a 4.9s for him and he rejoins 13th.

Amusingly Rosberg was told "box, box, but do the opposite of Vergne", basically meaning he had to react immediately to what the Toro Rosso did in front.

Replays show Vettel spun after touching that kerb but was lucky not to clutter into the inside wall. He tells Red Bull he's flat-spotted his tyre.

Lap 33

Gutierrez has retired in the pits.

Hamilton all over Vergne now but the Toro Rosso holds firm, he tries it through Turn 2 and they nearly touch as Vergne runs wide. Hamilton gets in a good position coming up the hill and passes him on the outside of Turn 5! Brilliant pass and, most important for his race, a crucial one as well. Is this race falling into Hamilton's favour?

Lap 34

Vergne now pits, his tyres must be shot.

Alonso still leading, he's 6.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton now. Vettel came in for a fresh set of mediums.

Rosberg still needs to get past the likes of Bottas, Magnussen, Button and Raikkonen this afternoon. Alonso and Hamilton can now build a bit of a gap.

Lap 35

Hamilton complains the left side of his seat is starting to get a little hot which, after what happened yesterday, must be a bit of a worry.

Vergne rejoined fourth after his stop. Seeing the replay again he did well to give Hamilton space there.

Lap 36

Ricciardo now sets a fastest lap as those tyres start to come into their own, its a 1:27.355. He's 1.9s down on Hamilton, who has slashed Alonso's advantage to 5.4s.

Mercedes tells Rosberg his team-mate is now ahead of him if he pits now.

Lap 37

Rosberg closing up behind the rear wing of Bottas, running on that medium tyre. At the moment Hamilton is lapping two seconds quicker, but Mercedes has told Rosberg to push like crazy. Some critical laps in this race for the championship leader.

Lap 38

Hamilton has one more lap and then he will box. If nothing goes wrong he will surely come out ahead of Rosberg.

Rosberg dives down the inside of Bottas and he forces the Finn wide, gaining 10th place. Hamilton 25 seconds in front of Rosberg, all the more crucial to pit Hamilton now that Rosberg has dispatched the Williams.

Hamilton tells Mercedes he can eek out another few more laps on these tyres and he stays out on Peter Bonnington's say-so.

Alonso pits and now Hamilton leads, albeit with one pit stop to come. Alonso rejoins ahead of Rosberg.

Lap 39

Dark clouds over the circuits starting to look threatening. Hamilton pits for soft tyres and rejoins well clear of Rosberg but behind Alonso.

Lap 40

So now Ricciardo leads! Are you keeping up with all this. We expect Ricciardo to be pitting for new tyres in around 10 laps. With medium tyres, Massa might not need to pit again.....

What a story it would be if Massa won at Hungary, where he had his accident in 2009.

Lap 41

This one is so difficult to predict. I imagine Hamilton will be going to the end of the race on these tyres. He's actually on the medium tyres, not the softs as I said. That would be why he can get to the end of the race but radio messages to Alonso suggests he might be as well.

Lap 42

Raikkonen pits for soft tyres and can't get out in front of Maldonado, and he's a sitting duck for Vettel who has a go around the outside of Turn 2 but the Finn refuses to yield and he holds on all the way up the hill. Great and fair driving from Raikkonen.

Lap 43

How good has the driving been this season? Another example of it there from Vettel and Raikkonen, both giving each other just enough road to fight fairly and now Raikkonen sets about reeling in Maldonado, whose tyres are 25 laps old.

Interesting to note Rosberg, behind Hamilton, is on soft tyres, but may need to pit again. Rosberg nibbling away at the deficit to his team-mate.

Ricciardo tells Red Bull his car may be losing power as he found a surge down the pit straight.

Raikkonen jumps past Maldonado through the penultimate corner. Maldonado jumps into the pits.

Lap 44

Rosberg's last lap was six tenths quicker than Hamilton's. I can't see Rosberg not having to pit again, though, as those tyres will surely go off soon. Hamilton, meanwhile, shaving time off Alonso in front with every lap. We could have an absolute barnstormer of a finish on our hands here.

Lap 45

Whether Hamilton is just backing off a bit to keep these tyres alive we don't now but Rosberg has cut the gap to 1.7s. Alonso now right up behind the medium-tyred Massa. Massa's lap times really starting to drop off, his laps are around 21 laps old and he dives into the pit lane from second.

Lap 46

Massa takes on more medium tyres so Williams clearly have little faith in the soft tyre. He rejoins ahead of Raikkonen.

Hamilton still complaint about his hot seat and says it's "like I felt in Montreal". We all remember what happened there.

Rosberg now one second behind Hamilton and cutting the gap all the time.

Lap 47

Peter Bonnington tells Hamilton that Rosberg has one more stop left and "don't hold him up". Interesting to see how Hamilton reacts to that order.... But now Hamilton knows if he gets to the end of the race on these tyres he will take points off his team-mate and, possibly, have a crack at victory.

Ricciardo should be pitting in the next few laps.

Lap 48

After getting that message to not hold Rosberg up, Hamilton laps one tenth quicker than his team-mate! Both of them lapping faster than Ricciardo.

Hamilton tells Mercedes he doesn't see his tyres lasting the distance, but Bonnington tells him they are confident they should. It's still so difficult to predict what's going to happen in the next 21 laps.

Lap 49

Hamilton still in front of Rosberg, who is five tenths behind. He's hardly going to pull over to one side of the race track and let him through, especially now we know he's concerned about not going the distance on these tyres.

Lap 50

Ricciardo's gap now 15.6s over Alonso, but he should be pitting any lap now.

Rosberg now eight tenths behind Hamilton and doesn't look close enough to make a move on his team-mate.

Alonso's pace also currently around the same as Ricciardo's, which is in the 1:28.3s mark.

Lap 51

"why is he not letting me through?" asks Rosberg. Hamilton is told to let him past on the start/finish straight but he doesn't. Surely if he does that here he'll lose so much time - he's still eight tenths in front at the moment. This one might just be bubbling over into something.

Mercedes effectively wanting Hamilton to lift off and lose around a second down the pit straight, when he's trying to keep Alonso in his sights in front. This one won't do those pesky conspiracy theories any good.

Hamilton tells Mercedes "I'm not slowing down for Nico."

Lap 52

Rosberg once again asks "Why is he not letting me through?" He sounds agitated. I wonder how long before Paddy Lowe gets on the radio.

Hamilton is well within his rights here, not only is he lapping quicker than Rosberg but he's also still a second ahead of him.

Lap 53

Ricciardo struggling with his rear tyres.

Lap 54

Ricciardo once again tells Red Bull he is having trouble on those tyres. He's 13.4 seconds ahead of Alonso, about 16 seconds ahead of Hamilton - and that is exactly why Hamilton can't afford to just move over and let Rosberg past him.

Rosberg has dropped off a bit now, maybe he's looking after those tyres until the end.

Lap 55

Ricciardo pits and Alonso inherits the lead.

Ricciardo now fourth and on fresh soft tyres. Hamilton tells Mercedes he's trying to manage the tyres as best he can.

Alonso currently lapping about half a second faster than Hamilton on those 19-lap old soft tyres. His pace can only suggest he is pitting again and looking to build a gap to Bottas.

Vettel tells Red Bull he has nothing to lose by staying out. He wants to be on that podium in about half an hour but it looks unlikely he will be from eighth.

Lap 56

Hamilton starting to struggle for pace severely now. Both Mercedes drivers lapping in the low 1:29s, Alonso's last lap a 1:28.281.

Lap 57

Mercedes calls in Rosberg and he pits. Soft tyres go on to the Mercedes. He has not only come out behind Massa, but also Bottas and Raikkonen. He's got one hell of a job on his hands now to get a podium finish.

Rosberg told he needs to push like crazy and produce 13 qualifying laps.

Mercedes clearly thinking he would have vaulted those three had Hamilton let Rosberg past him.

Lap 58

You have to think this one is now between Hamilton, on the old, worn medium tyre, and Ricciardo, on the fresher soft rubber behind. Ricciardo just set a fastest lap, a 1:26.783.

Hamilton cutting the gap down to Alonso, his last lap six tenths quicker than the Spaniard. That gap now 3.3 seconds. This is going to be some finish.

Lap 59

Hamilton catching Alonso, Ricciardo catching Hamilton. Hold on to your seats.

Whoever says F1's product is in trouble needs to be forced to watch this race over and over again.

Lap 60

Rosberg right up behind Raikkonen and for a second it looks like they might touch at Turn 12 but Raikkonen is having none of it.

Rosberg dives down the inside of Raikkonen and into fifth place. Great driving from the championship leader, risky but he knew Raikkonen would respect his space and he did.

Alonso's lead over Hamilton 1.6 seconds. Hamilton's lead over Ricciardo 1.6 seconds. This is too good.

Bottas pits, which suggests Massa still needs to pit.

Lap 61

Rosberg jumps down the inside of Massa and the Williams is powerless to defend on those old medium tyres. Rosberg up into fourth and he's about 23 seconds behind Ricciardo in third.

Lap 62

The gap in front now eight tenths, Ricciardo just half a second behind Hamilton. DRS available for both. They've got eight laps to resolve this.

Ferrari confirms they are keeping Alonso out to win this race.

Hamilton told to use higher RPM and shorter gears, Bonnington also saying he's doing a good job to "manage" an issue. If they're advising him to avoid the torque maybe a hot gearbox.

Lap 63

Hamilton and Ricciardo not close enough to the man in front as Rosberg sets a fastest lap now he has some clean air, 1:26.083.

Ricciardo seems to be sizing Hamilton up but he still needs to get past the Mercedes. Red Bull tells him he can use the overtake button. Not often you see Alonso making that kind of error.

Alonso runs across the chicane but stays in front, I imagine he'll need to back off to give back the advantage gained.

Lap 64

Hamilton complains Alonso gained an advantage and Mercedes says it will look into it. May have been before he backed off.

Another fastest lap from Rosberg. 17 seconds behind now and he will be right with this pack at the end if they can't pass Alonso.

Lap 65

Ricciardo looks closer to Hamilton but the Mercedes power unit doing its job well down the pit straight. Ricciardo now right behind Hamilton and he tries it on the outside of Turn 2 but Hamilton holds firm, Ricciardo runs wide and has to bail out of the move.

Rosberg sets another fastest lap and at this rate he will catch this gaggle of cars before the end! He's taking nearly three seconds off this pack every lap. Ricciardo needs to clear Hamilton asap, Hamilton needs to do the same to Alonso...

Lap 66

Five laps remaining and once again Hamilton is not close enough to get past Alonso. Surely, surely Alonso does not have enough to win this race? What a story it would be if he could.

Hamilton locks up through Turn 2 and Ricciardo closes right up, but not close enough. Hamilton in the unenviable position of needing to attack and defend during the same lap. Alonso in front can just think about defending, Ricciardo about attacking.

Lap 67

Hamilton now being told how to defend this position.

Hamilton slow again out of Turn 1 and once again forces Ricciardo wide through Turn 2 but Ricciardo gets past him at the start of the hill! Now he has Alonso in his sights.

Ricciardo went wide through Turn 2 but his superior traction meant he was able to swing by Hamilton and now we have Alonso v Ricciardo part two!

This all means Rosberg will come up behind Hamilton in a few laps time.

Lap 68

Rosberg now eight seconds down on Hamilton. Ricciardo launches it down the inside of Alonso and he makes it stick! Wonderful lap from Ricciardo, jumping from third to first. Superb racing from the Australian.

Hamilton now all over the back of Alonso, who got out of position and looks to be struggling with grip. Alonso clinging on for dear life and somehow stays ahead of Hamilton through the penultimate corner.

Lap 69

Alonso, who pitted on lap 39, may finally have lost his tyres but Hamilton can't get close enough still! He's all over the back of him and with two laps behind him Rosberg is right up in Hamilton's mirrors, 1.5s behind his team-mate.

"My tyres are dead, guys" says Hamilton. Rosberg has grip behind both of them...

Lap 70

Ricciardo begins the final lap and Rosberg is just 1.5 seconds behind Hamilton. Hamilton launches on Alonso but can't get by, Rosberg all over the back of him but Hamilton forces him wide at Turn 2!

Surely now Hamilton needs to focus on holding on to third. Alonso can crawl home with these two guys fighting it out.

Daniel Ricciardo wins a sensational Hungarian Grand Prix

Alonso second! Hamilton clings on for third and Rosberg has to settle for fourth.

What. A. Race. Absolutely supreme driving from all four of those guys.

Ricciardo roars down the radio as Christian Horner says: "Absolutely amazing! Sensational You deserve that buddy, well done." What a revelation the Australian is proving to be. That middle stint was crucial, it kept him in contention when he knew another soft tyre stint was still to come.

Hats off to Fernando Alonso as well. As if anyone needed any reminding, the man is pretty good.

Hamilton congratulates Ricciardo backstage but its all pretty quiet down there. Alonso also shakes his hand, not much being said between Alonso and Hamilton.

Ricciardo beats his chest in parc ferme and laps up the adulation of the Red Bull mechanics.

"Nice work Lewis," says Peter Bonnington to Lewis Hamilton. I wonder how that team order stuff will play out but it turned out to be the right decision, if Hamilton had let Rosberg through, he would have finished fourth, not third.
